The mystery involves an amethyst earring, poison mushrooms, a Border collie, a ferret, and an old family secret.

Dotsy Lamb, history professor from Virginia and recently divorced empty-nester, and her friend Lettie are on a group tour of Italy when a singularly obnoxious member of the group is murdered in her Florence hotel room. The woman was traveling with her two sisters, and the murder weapon is a knife that everyone knows was bought by one of those sisters the day before. The killer may be a member of their tour group, a gypsy from a nearby camp, or any of four people they've met since their arrival. There are motive galore.
