Scam Alert: Keep an eye out for these emails

We’ve seen an increase in scam and phishing attempts in recent months, luring unsuspecting writers with offers of media coverage and book club appearances. They prey on our insecurities and our desire to be the author with The Next Big Thing. Recently, one of our board members received an offer from someone posing as a representative of Mystery Writers of America. The address and logo were there, and even the email address was close enough that some might mistake it for the real thing.

MWA does not reach out to individual authors to “see where your book stands in its journey,” or offer to “expand reach to new readers.” These are scam attempts to validate your email address, and to try to engage you in a marketing scam. We’ve asked “Lily,” the supposed MWA Customer Support person, to stop.

Please be aware of these scam attempts and use caution. We live in interesting times…
